[photogallerylink id=58018 align=left]Good deal, huh? Well, don’t get too excited because that particular WXRT show was 30 years ago tomorrow. It was U2′s second Chicago show following a set at the University of Chicago the night before.

The show was rather short, if I recall, with the band actually playing most of Boy and “I Will Follow” twice although the official setlist doesn’t back me up on that.

Anybody remember anything else?

Raise your hand and toss your water jug if you saw [lastfm]Ted Nugent[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Lynyrd Skynyrd[/lastfm] at Soldier Field in July ’77! Wahoo! Gotta love the fact that the ticket service charge was only sixty cents…

Was the band really called “The U2″ or is that a misprint on the ticket?

The tour was in support of the stateside release of Boy (it was out in the UK in the fall of ’80). So, yeah, apparently the band was still so unknown here that the name got goofed.

I have a stub from the Dec 6 ’81 Park West show ($7.00)
No “THE” just U2. All I remember is leaning back on the foot of the stage to look at the audience during the show, and BONO would throw up a cup of water and duck under it to get wet. The EDGE would tease with the opening of Follow a couple times during the show before playing the song near the end.

I saw them in 1981 at the University of Chicago. It was their first trip to Chicago and Bono told the several hundred in attendance that they’re testing their stuff out on us because they’re going to be at the Park West (ooooooohh!!) the next night. He said he hopes they do okay. Well, needless to say they blew the doors off the place. We weren’t used to getting major acts at the U of C so to hear a band that was as tight and exciting as these guys were was exceptional. The next time I saw them was last summer at Soldier Field. Such an incredible act and historic band. I can’t get enough of their stuff.
