[photogallerylink id=66794 align=left]Chicago Day and Fat Tuesday celebrated within one week on XRT?! Two of the best cities in the world are featured one after the other. New Orleans you may have heard often on XRT as our sister city. Most of us on the XRT staff have connections to the Crescent City that links our souls. My link is an affinity towards New Orleans that goes back in my family to the summer of 1930.
After graduating high school my grandma’s drama teacher invited her to join a stage production that entertained women’s clubs along the Gulf Coast. Her time in New Orleans would never be forgotten. My grandma returned with memories that were shared with us for years. My first trip to New Orleans carried the same magnitude. That trip included the best day of my life. This is not an exaggeration. I’ve been many places, had wonderful trips, have had some perfect days that I’m thankful for and taken it all in with enjoyment. New Orleans just multiplies the experience. It has the best of everything. It has the best food, music, drinks, character, bars, streets and life. If you get out and soak it all in with a little planning and spontaneity all the stars may just align. Hope you get your chance for something unforgettable if you haven’t had such an experience. It’s a big world.
Luckily in Chicago you never have to go far if you can’t actually get away. XRT is always in on the fun with our Fat Tuesday salute to New Orleans for the day. For the week leading up to Ash Wednesday I like to visit businesses that take part in Mardi Gras around our area. There are always some that let you down, because they’re sponsored by a beer company for a night, but don’t seem to know any of the tradition or cuisine. I have two suggestions that a few others on our staff would agree with. Both are in the near west suburbs if you need a place to escape. You are always guaranteed to let the good times roll if you stop in at Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn. They are your getaway year round for those that miss Louisiana: http://www.fitzgeraldsnightclub.com/ My favorite roll with good cuisine along with the festive atmosphere is at the Chew Chew Café where they’ve been celebrating Mardi Gras week for over ten years in Riverside: http://thechewchew.com/ Just seek out anyone that knows what they’re doing and you’re half way there. Enjoy the ride: Laissez les bons temps rouler!
