Yes, that’s a shot of my weekly cartoonish double order of pancakes that I take down @ Orange on Grand (and that’s a big plate, too). Most people have a go-to breakfast spot. There are places that always have a line. Places that have damn good food, but with super tiny pancake portions. Places that always have a table for you with decent eats. Places that never close with food that, uh… Did I mention that they never close? And the neighborhood spot that’s steps away from your place that sometimes wins by default.

But it always seems to go back to Orange. The pancakes are awesome and plentiful, the coffee’s not bad, the green eggs & ham is pretty memorable, as is the Tijuana benedict.

Oh, and a quick shout to Stax Cafe on West Taylor. Went in there a couple weeks ago and noticed Mr. Frank E. Lee on the radio for the entire restaurant to hear.

Nice dude! Orange is sweet – and their orange coffee is easy to overdo. Other breakfast places?

You have to love Ann Sather on Belmont (favorite hang for Terri Hemmert) and Nookies on Halsted is a solid bet. If you’re near Elmhurst, Rainbow on York is the way to go. Maybe you’ll even run into Frank E. Lee there.

If you’re in the mood for a suburban road trip, nothing beats The Egg-clectic Cafe just north of Woodfield mall.

I recently fell in love with the “pancake of the day” menu at State & Lake restaurant in theWit Hotel. They have a secret ingredient that makes them verrry special for a treat before work!

Since the chef at State & Lake w/ fabulous croque madames is unfortunately gone, my Loop choice is Atwood Cafe (http://www.atwoodcafe.com). My favorite in the suburbs is Walker Brothers (http://walkerbros.net) and in the city nothing beats Julius Meinl (http://www.meinl.com) . Excellent crepes & al fresco dining are my must-haves. But with both places you have to get there EARLY or the din will leave you as hearing-impaired as the day after a Who concert.

Love Orange…try the Fruity Pebble pancakes on the kids menu. To die for!
