Legendary industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails last week re-issued their 1989 debut album, Pretty Hate Machine.
Due to disagreements between NIN founder (and only constant member) [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Trent Reznor[/lastfm] and the original publishing company, the release was long out of print. 2005 saw a re-release, however it has now been re-mastered and re-released with bonus track “Get Down, Make Love,” a cover of a track by Queen.
Last.fm Trends takes a closer look at how the release has stood up amongst subsequent releases by the band.
Nine Inch Nails are one of the most played rock artists on Last.fm, with a total of 109,096,706 scrobbles and 1,406,498 listeners. In contrast with other popular industrial acts, Rammstein have 88,324,860 scrobbles whilst Ministry, who also came from the 1980′s era with Nine Inch Nails, have just 7,680,235 scrobbles.
The chart below tells us that Pretty Hate Machine hasn’t fared too well amongst the rest of the band’s catalogue.

With 4,766,698 scrobbles, the album is their sixth most played studio album, beating only Broken ; not a full length release.
We could probably look to the fact that it was out of print for eight years for reasons behind it’s low rating, however tracks such as “Head Like A Hole” still sit amongst the band’s top tracks, boasting 1,290,604 scrobbles.
The recent re-release should see the album start to climb the band’s charts, especially if the new cover track receives a positive reception. The original by Queen currently holds 175,904 scrobbles.
We’ll be sure to keep track of how the re-release fares but in the meantime make sure you are scrobbling what you listen to. Head to Last.fm for more information.
