Her music celebrates caring, sharing, living and loving. Fans and friends at the sold-out venue were treated to songs from Staples’ new album, which was lovingly produced by [lastfm]Wilco[/lastfm]’s Jeff Tweedy. There were heartwarming, hand-clapping spirituals like “Creep Along, Moses,” the optimistic funk of “We’re Gonna Make It” and the richly beautiful title ballad “You are Not Alone.”

[photogallerylink id=40226 align=left]Mavis honored her father, the great Pops Staples, with his song “Freedom Highway” and raised the roof with the Staples Singers’ 1972 hit “I’ll Take You There.” Staples’ amazing voice showed all its colors, enhanced by her excellent trio and vocalists including her sister, Yvonne. Mavis is still a dynamo at 71 years young, and though she has nothing yet to prove, outdid herself again, singing directly from her heart to ours.
