Originally released in November of 1979, The Wall was America’s top-selling album of 1980 (placing #8 in the 1979 Listener Poll and #23 in the 1980 XRT Listener Poll) is one of the top-selling double albums of all time, and is still in the US Top 5 best-selling albums of all time. One of the most profoundly influential albums in the history of recorded music, The Wall continues to affect pop culture while resonating with generations of music fans.

[lastfm]Roger Waters[/lastfm] is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the original release with a state-of-the-art stage show, which launched last week in Toronto and has now touched down in Chicago. The centerpiece of the show is a 240-foot-wide by 35-foot wall between the audience and the stage.

“I recently came across this quote of mine from 22 years ago,” Waters said. ”What it comes down to for me is this: Will the technologies of communication in our culture, serve to enlighten us … or will they deceive us and keep us apart? … All these issues and ‘isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life. This new production of The Wall is an attempt to draw some comparisons, to illuminate our current predicament, and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years.” I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to express my, albeit guarded, optimism, and encourage others to do the same.
