That’s not the President’s new nick name. That’s a reference to August 9th, 1978 when [lastfm]Muddy Waters[/lastfm] performed for President Jimmy Carter at the White House. That’s a long way from the Checkerboard Lounge here in Chicago. Muddy must have been thrilled. And anyone there that night got to hear one of the all time greats. I know Paul McCartney, who has played for the Queen and got an MBE at Buckingham Palace and is a “sir”, was totally jazzed to be playing the White House for the Obamas. It must be a highlight for any musician’s career. Way to go, Muddy.
Couldn’t find a clip of Muddy at the White House, but did find this performance on the XRT Blues Deluxe stage at Chicagofest, 1981, when it was on Navy Pier….with Johnny Winter in the band. I was there. Unforgetable. If you were there or any of the sets at the Blues Deluxe stage when it was on the pier, I’d love to hear your story. One of the reasons God made those “comments” boxes at the end of the blog.
