Ken has radio in the blood. He has worked on-air in one capacity or another for over twenty-five years. His humble beginning was at 10-watt WGHS 88.5, a station located on the 7th floor of Glenbard West High School, where he first heard and spun the likes of R.E.M., The Smiths, The Replacements and Joy Division in the early 1980’s.
He enrolled at the University of Iowa and before even unpacking, he hightailed it over to KRUI, the student-run station and secured an early morning airshift. He made the most of his KRUI years, serving as a news anchor, fill-in Hawkeye baseball color analyst, talk show co-host and, of course, DJ.
After a stint working “Hot A/C” in Cedar Rapids, IA, spinning the likes of Michael Bolton and Paula Abdul, he found himself working back in Chicagoland at WCBR (The Bear), where the music and in-studio guests got much better. In a year’s time, he got to meet and interview Frank Black, Widespread Panic, Einsturzende Neubauten and former Replacements drummer (and World-Class painter) Chris Mars.
Beginning at XRT in February 1994, he’s still considered one of the ‘new guys’. A chance to report on the XRT Fireworks from the air in 1998 ended up landing him a side gig as an Airborne Reporter for WMAQ, WGN and WBBM. In the late 90’s he became smitten with a girl named Carla from the Promotions Department who he married in 2002. They welcomed their first child, Abby, on St. Patrick’s Day 2009. These days, Ken splits his time between watching Abby, working a few overnights and a Saturday evening shift on XRT and working as a freelance copywriter and audio engineer. In his all too rare free time, he also enjoys golfing, tennis, exercise, cooking and travel.
